Developed through sampling, a technique of appropriating segments from music, videos and film, After the Rainbow (2009) combines film clips from The Wizard of Oz (1939) and a 1960s television special starring Judy Garland. The work interweaves the fantasy world of cinema with the complex reality of Garland’s life. After the Rainbow is the second work in Soda_Jerk’s Dark Matter series, an ongoing cycle of video installations featuring deceased movie stars. The series explores the relationship between screen technologies and the personal and communal experiences of time and death.

If you haven't already heard... the petition to get enough signatures to put Initiative 71, a measure that would fully legalize possession of marijuana in the District, has been successful and you'll see the vote on the November ballot. Read more on the recent article in the DCist here. Also, in case you didn't know, the D.C. Council even voted in March to decriminalize possession, making it a fine of $25, instead of a year-long jail term. As circulated, the measure would allow people 21 and older to possess as much as two ounces of marijuana for personal use and to grow up to three marijuana plants at home. To steer clear of a direct contradiction of federal law, the measure does not allow for the sale of marijuana. Read more here.

From murder to redemption, from jazz to rock and roll, from striptease to Kiss, from Mister T to misadventure ... the documentary, like The Bayou Foreigner made its club debut there.... The Bayou encompassed U2′s first American show, Bono and mates opening for the Slickee Boys; Billy Joel’s live cuts that shaped the album “Songs in the Attic”; Bruce Springsteen’s unexpected appearance during a Robbin Thompson concert, and so much more .... Kiss had the amps so juiced that areas of the city lost electricity."
